Al Latham is a living demonstration of what it means to lead an environmentally friendly life. He has a solar-powered lawnmower, lives "off the grid" most of the year and, as Jefferson County Conservation District manager, has helped countless farmers and others find ways to work with the environment.

For his years of dedication and "walking the talk," Latham was awarded the fourth annual Eleanor Stopps Environmental Leadership Award on April 20 at the Green Living Expo.

His advice may be free, but I think it's priceless.

Tami Pokorny presented Latham with the award and queried the audience about how many could say they live off the grid and know how to cook using cow patties for fuel.

Pokorny also offered some of Latham's witticisms.

"Al likes to say it's a conversation district not a conservation district," she said. And he also says, "My advice is free and worth every penny."

"His advice may be free, but I think it's priceless," Pokorny said of Latham. She noted that Latham found a way to help farmers provide water to livestock via a solar-powered system.

Latham stood by Eleanor Stopps, who was present for the occasion.

"Any of us who have been around for a while are inspired by Eleanor's work, so I am honored,' Latham said of receiving the award.

After the award presentation, Latham went back to a booth where he was demonstrating several "living green" works, including his solar-powered electric lawnmower, which, he joked, works only for about 30 minutes at a time before it needs to be recharged, which offers the user time for a break.
