The Acorn Foundation is particularly interested in small and innovative community-based projects which organize the community to preserve and restore habitats supporting biological diversity and wildlife, and prevent or remedy toxic pollution. Grants are in the $10,000 range.
American Honda Foundation funds science education ($10,000-$100,000).
American Rivers & NOAA Community-Based Restoration Program River Grants provide financial and technical assistance for river restoration projects benefiting diadromous fish species.
AT&T Foundation funds technology in education or community economic development:
The Brainerd Foundation has three environmental programs: Endangered Ecosystems, Toxics and Communities, and Communications and Capacity Building. The foundation's fields of interest are natural resource conservation and protection. http://www.brainerd.org/
Bullitt Foundation Environmental Grants (Due: Applications considered on an ongoing basis)
The mission of The Bullitt Foundation is to protect, restore, and maintain the natural physical environment of the Pacific Northwest for present and future generations. The Foundation invites proposals from nonprofit organizations that serve Washington, Oregon, Idaho, western Montana (including the Rocky Mountain range), coastal Alaska from Cook Inlet to the Canadian border, and British Columbia. The Foundation has the following program areas:
- Aquatic Ecosystems
- Terrestrial Ecosystems
- Conservation and Stewardship in Agriculture
- Energy and Climate Change
- Growth Management and Transportation
- Toxic and Radioactive Substances
- Training, Communications, and Unique Opportunities
Grant application deadlines are May 1 and November 1. The Foundation does not use a letter of inquiry pre-screening process. However, prospective applicants are urged to contact the appropriate program officer to discuss their request prior to submittal. The Burning Foundation funds PNW organizations addressing issues to protect threatened rivers and forests, nurture native fish populations, and conserve land and open space for ecological and recreational purposes
Captain Planet Foundation Environmental Grants for Youth (Due: Applications considered on an ongoing basis) The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation (CPF) is to support hands-on environmental projects for youth in grades K-12. Our objective is to encourage innovative activities that empower children around the world to work individually and collectively as environmental stewards. Through ongoing education, we believe that children can play a vital role in preserving our precious natural resources for future generations. Deadlines for submitting grant applications are March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31. See the website for additional information.
Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation (Due: Applications considered on an ongoing basis) Lindbergh Grants are made in the following categories: agriculture; aviation/aerospace; conservation of natural resources - including animals, plants, water, and general conservation (land, air, energy, etc.); education - including humanities/education, the arts, and intercultural communication; exploration; health - including biomedical research, health and population sciences, and adaptive technology; and waste minimization and management. The deadline for grant applications is the second Thursday of June in the year preceeding the awarding of funds. For example, for funding beginning in July of 2008, applications are due June 14, 2007. See the Foundation's website for more information.
Charles Stewart Mott Foundation Environment Grants (Due: Applications considered on an ongoing basis) The mission of the Environment program is to support the efforts of an engaged citizenry working to create accountable and responsive institutions, sound public policies, and appropriate models of development that protect the diversity and integrity of selected ecosystems in North America and around the world.
The Environment program is organized into three program areas:
- Conservation of Freshwater Ecosystems
- International Finance for Sustainability
- Special Initiatives
Funding for unsolicited proposals is limited throughout the program. Those interested in applying for funding are strongly encouraged to submit letters of inquiry instead of a full proposal. See the Foundation's website for more information.
ESRI Conservation Program (ECP) The non-profit support arm of the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) donates ESRI GIS software and training to non-profit organizations and individual projects to support an overall mission of conservation and social change. http://www.conservationgis.org/
The Fields Pond Foundation's primary mission is to provide financial assistance to nature and land conservation organizations that are community-based and that serve to increase environmental awareness by involving local residents in conservation issues. Typical grants average $10,000.
FishAmerica Foundation supports projects designed to enhance fish populations such as habitat enhancement and water quality improvement projects. Applications should be made approximately one year in advance of anticipated need for funding. http://www.asafishing.org/asa/index.html
The Kongsgaard-Goldman Foundation provides between $1,000-$15,000 for habitat protection and restoration formation of watershed councils, citizen involvement, public education and sustainable development. Mountaineers Foundation promotes the study of PNW mountains, forests and streams, and contributes to preserving its natural beauty and ecological integrity. The group supports: (1) studies that will yield new data aimed at protecting Northwest wilderness and wildlife, (2) biologic, economic, legal, or policy studies, and (3) direct educational programs and materials related to environmental preservation. They also fund selected capital improvement projects (e.g., restoration and assistance in purchasing equipment/materials).
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation provides funding on a competitive basis to projects that sustain, restore and enhance the Nation's fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats through Keystone Initiative Grants and other Special Grant Programs (including the Community Salmon Fund and the Pioneers in Conservation grant).
National Geographic Conservation Trust funds projects contributing to the sustainable use of earth's resources ($15,000-20,000).
The Northwest Fund for the Environment gives grants for environmental purposes, including grants for stewardship programs, action plans, strategic litigation, and capacity building for conservation organizations. It also gives grants for protection of wildlife habitats, water quality, sustainable forestry, and shoreline and wetland environments. http://www.nwfund.org/
The Ocean Fund is supported by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. It provides grants made annually to a variety of nonprofit groups and institutions for marine conservation activities covering research, education, and innovative technologies. Grants average between $25,000 and $50,000. Letters of interest are due by June 30.
Russell Foundation Grants focus on Puget Sound, environmental education and green business practices.
SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education) funding assists researchers, agricultural educators, farmers, and ranchers, funding projects such as interdisciplinary research or demonstration projects which forge a connection between sustainable agriculture and rural community development.
The Washington Foundation for the Environment is primarily focused on environmental education workshops, institutes, conferences, and exhibits which hold the promise of increasing public awareness of significant environmental issues. Also considered are grants for individual and group scholarships to attend worthwhile conferences and educational programs.
The Wilburforce Foundation supports programs that protect the Earth's natural habitats and environments, or reduce pressure on ecosystems through education about the effects of human over-population. Applicants who are interested in submitting a grant proposal must contact the appropriate staff member prior to developing a proposal. http://www.wilburforce.org/
Wildlife Forever Challenge Grants
Deadline: January 1, 2009
Grants from Wildlife Forever are targeted for habitat restoration and acquisition, research and management, and educational projects. Special emphasis is placed upon grassroots programs that involve local conservation, sportsmen's or outdoor recreation groups.
